Tin Man fanfic: The Remote (WIP) - Part 3

Headers in Part 1

Previously - Part 2

*~*

DG and her mother returned just as Glitch had fallen asleep on the couch with Cain and Raw at his side. Not noticing the tension in the room or the worried faces, she grinned at Cain. “Wore him out already?”

The Tin Man looked up at her, turning to lean his back against the couch as he sat on the floor. “We’ve got a problem, Princess,” he told her wearily, rubbing his eyes. “We found the surgical ward and Glitch came across a remote control. Found out the hard way that it controls a machine inside his own body.”

“Oh, Ambrose,” Lavender gasped softly, glancing between her former advisor and her eldest daughter.

Stunned, DG stared for a moment at her friends. “What happened?” DG moved forward determinedly, sitting on the edge of the couch next to Glitch. “Is he okay?”

Cain scooted over a bit, giving her room to fuss over Glitch. He pulled the remote from his pocket and showed her. “He gave himself a hell of a shock,” he explained. “Azkadellia remembered that they put some kind of implanted machine in the back of his neck, connected to his nervous system. The alchemists were experimenting on him, ‘cause he was the first person to be headcased and they didn’t know if it would work.”

“Oh, Glitch,” she whispered, brushing the long curls from his forehead delicately. “We’re going to take it out of him, right?”

“Hadn’t gotten that far, we only just figured out what it was that did it. He was in so much pain, DG,” Cain gave her a miserable look. “Only just got him settled.”

DG looked over at where her sister was sitting. “Az, do know if it’s possible to take this machine out of Glitch?”

Azkadellia sighed, looking years older all of a sudden. “I don’t know, Deeg. It’s been so long since Ambrose...he was the only one they used the machine on. The test case. There was no point after the alchemists figured out that the surgery was successful so they didn’t keep me updated on their work.”

“But there must be records left,” Lavender spoke up from behind DG, addressing them all. “We all have a great deal of responsibilities for the foreseeable future but we must ensure the wellbeing of every one of us here if we are to succeed in restoring order to our world. I won’t have my Ambrose suffering any more than he already has.”

“I’m with you there, Your Majesty,” Cain leaned his head back against the cushion, reassured by the sound of Glitch’s even breaths next to his ear. “Raw and I will go back down to the ward, see if we can find anything useful. DG, you work with your sister, see what you guys can remember. Names of any surgeons, alchemists...hell, engineers. We need a lot more information before I’m willing to risk doing anything that could hurt Glitch.”

“None of us are willing to hurt him, Mr. Cain,” Azkadellia was the one to respond. “I realize I wasn’t directly responsible for the witch’s actions but I plan to do everything in my power to undo the damage she has done.”

Cain found himself strangely reluctant to leave Glitch, but he was reassured when the Queen pulled a chair up next to her old friend and gave Cain a look that told him she wasn’t going anywhere.

Casting one last worried look at his sleeping friend, Cain gave into Raw’s insistent tugging on his sleeve and followed the Viewer.

Setting about on a more thorough search of the disturbingly quiet room where Ambrose had, for all intents and purposes, lost his life, Cain couldn’t help but shudder when he saw the familiar table in the middle of the floor. “I’m going to melt that thing down the first chance I get,” he muttered darkly.

Raw’s presence was as calming as always and Cain stayed close to him as they dug through drawers and rifled fingers over yellowed papers and worn, leather-bound books. “Now we have O.Z. back,” Raw started casually. “Go on with lives. You tell Glitch?”

“Tell Glitch what?” Cain frowned, only half-listening.

“Love,” Raw answered simply.

Cain stumbled, bracing a hand on a counter for balance. “I told you before, you see too much,” Cain growled, his eyes cold and defensive. “Glitch has enough problems right now without me confusing him even further. I’ll ask you kindly to stay out of it.”

With a resigned nod of surrender, Raw looked back at the papers in his hands. “Glitch scared, feels alone.” Cain’s head shot up and he spun around but he was immediately stopped by Raw’s hand gripping his arm. “Not now, Queen with him. Glitch...feel lonely.”

“Oh,” Cain had the grace to blush at his instinctual reaction. “Look, you know how I feel about him. But until all of us know where we’re going or what we’re doing next, I just can’t start making promises I don’t know if I can keep. I intend to see him through this, but after that...what does he want?”

Raw opened his mouth to answer but Cain’s hand covered it before he could make more than a squeak.

“Don’t answer that. I respect your abilities, Raw, but this is something the two of us need to do on our own,” Cain said by way of apology. “If Glitch returns my feelings, I need to hear it from him. You understand, don’t you?”

Nodding with a secretive smile, Raw patted his arm. “Yes.”

“Thanks,” Cain gave him a half smile and pulled open another cabinet door, finding more journals and loose papers. Dragging a handful of them down, he glanced through them until he came across a series of sketches that caught his eye. “Well, now, this looks familiar.”

Raw reached over and touched the corner of the paper. He immediately pulled his hand away as if burned. “Plans for...tests,” he growled.

“Looks like it.” Cain quickly scanned the notes on the pages, feeling vaguely ill as the implications of ‘the prisoner’ sunk in. He read silently while Raw’s presence next to him was a welcome warmth against the otherwise cold feeling he had. “It’s connected to his brain stem, acting as a...kind of pathway for signals.”

“Take it out?” Raw got to the point quickly.

Cain raised his head, expression bleak and worried. “I don’t think we can,” he said in a low voice. “If I’m understanding this right, the machine is the only way his brain can send and receive information. What he’s always saying about his synapses not firing right? Without this, he wouldn’t have anything firing at all. It’s keeping him alive.”

“But...Azkadellia say it very old, not working right,” Raw pointed out anxiously.

“It was probably never meant to last this long,” Cain gave a shaky sigh. “That might be why the remote box gave him such a jolt. What we need is a surgeon who can fix the connections, update his surgery, before this thing gets any worse. It could be annuals before they figure out if it’s possible to reverse the headcasing; I don’t think Glitch has that kind of time.”

Lovely plot twist with the machine keeping Glitch alive. Someone better be paying attention to that remote. More more more! I feel like that plant in Little Shop of Horrors, feeeeeeeeeeed meeeeeeeeeeee. *throws you kudos*

My day is SO improved! *squees quietly*
I love how Cain automatically moves over so DG has room to fuss over Glitch. And how he misunderstands Raw and is about to dash off before realizing Raw meant 'in general' and not 'right this second'. And, you know, I really liked that Lavender gets a chance to spend some time sitting alone with Ambrose and protecting him while he sleeps, that was nice.
And oh, this was so chilling:
What he’s always saying about his synapses not firing right? Without this, he wouldn’t have anything firing at all. It’s keeping him alive.”
ACK! Like feedingheads said up there, I've also got my nose to the screen. :D

Yay! I'm happy to hear that I improved your day - I was hoping to accomplish that! :D

I'm hoping to stretch a bit with the surrounding characters, rather that focus on just Glitch and Cain like I usually do (but they'll get plenty of time together, I'm sure!). It will be fun to explore a wider variety of relationships, and one of them I'm planning to touch on is between Glitch and Lavender.

Good catch on noticing how Wyatt was ready to run off and save Glitch from being left alone! *giggle*

*HUGS!* Now the question is how far do I want to go with this, plot-wise? *ponders deeply*

OMG! Poor glitch!

I need IV bribing. Stop your job, stop your social life! Whatever it takes to finish this right away...you can't leave us hanging THERE!

LOL! Just joking! I loved it, and I am truely biting my nails now.

LOL! Does it help that I'm currently on vacation (as I'm a public school employee and my first summer camp work isn't for a couple of weeks)? *stretches lazily* I got all the time I want to write! :D

However...I'm also making this up as I go along, literally. I still need to figure out where to go next! Thanks for your awesome encouragement - it's what keeps me going!

Funny, I was taking a break from working and idly thought to myself, "I bet Surreal has another bit of The Remote posted."

I am so glad you do not disappoint. :3

I know I don't really comment much, but I've probably read all your Tin fics and loved each one. The Remote is truly, wondrfully disturbing. The last bits of conversation between Raw and Cain dropped ice in my stomach.

Oh god why is Ambrose so much fun to torture I bet he hates us all by now. :P

Ooooh...thank you so much!! I really appreciate your taking the time to comment - I love finding out who is reading along!

Guess I should figure out what happens next then, huh? :D

Oh crap, as if a remote control, massive pain thingy wasn't bad enough! Now it has to be a old, decrepit, faulty, remote control massive pain thingy that will probably kill him! Poor Glitch, he aways gets the crappy end of things doesn't he? It's a real pity I love it so much when he does.....especially when Cain feels the need to comfort him. :D

Awesome story, I loved Cain sitting on the floor listening to Glitch's breathing.

Direction for the story, how about a direction that has lots of holding and petting and aw poor babying? Just an idea....

Hehe! That's always a preferable direction...there will be plenty of the comfort, don't worry! Thanks! :D *runs off to plot some more*

Without this, he wouldn’t have anything firing at all. It’s keeping him alive.”

This gave me *chills*. What an inventive twist!

I also like Raw-as-Yenta. Sometimes those strong, silent, *dim* Tin Men need a rap on the knuckles to get their attention!

Looking forward to the next part!

Thanks! I do enjoy beating on poor Glitch, he takes it so well. *grin*

Raw is a great, versatile character - he has such an interesting insight into all of them, it makes him the perfect person to knock some sense into the boys!

Thanks! I think Raw is going to be busy with those two. :D

*snort* Eyepatch. That's just what this fandom needs, a pirate AU. Ha!

this time I tortured myself. Started reading 15 minutes before I have to leave for work. which wouldn't have been a problem if I didn't get called in *pouts over not being able to sit in bed and read fic all day while watching Veronica Mars* lol ;D

I love Raw and his insightfulness and Cain with his cute man crush!! :D
