Fic: Hush

Title: Hush
Rating: PG
Pairing/Characters: Glitch/Cain, DG/Raw (maybe?)
Summary: Words can hurt.

“Glitch, shut up,” DG’s voice sounded flat and brittle in the small, cramped library but her words brought the room’s activity to an abrupt, jarring stop.

For a moment, no one breathed; Glitch had frozen in place, his hand still poised above the ancient book in DG’s hands. Then his arm simply fell, his expression completely unreadable. He swallowed once then turned on his heel toward the door.

“Glitch – “ DG started but damn, Glitch could move fast when he wanted to. He was gone before she’d finished saying his name. DG sat on the edge of the closest desk, setting the book down and putting her face in her hands. “Damn it.”

Cain exhaled loudly, shooting a dark look toward DG before hurrying out of the room himself, presumably on Glitch’s rapidly cooling trail.

Left alone with DG, Raw closed his eyes and let the residual pain left by Glitch wash past him, along with the hurt and anger from Cain.

It was DG who broke the silence. “He knows I didn’t mean to yell at him, right? I was just frustrated and tired and these stupid ancient textbooks are giving me such a headache...”

“He knows,” Raw told her dully. “Not the tone. The words.”

DG looked up, frowning. “I know it was a harsh thing to say – “

“Glitch spent many annuals trying to make his voice heard,” Raw cut her off uncharacteristically, his tone gentle but faintly disappointed. “Glitch needs to know we are willing to listen.”

“How am I going to apologize to him?”

Raw stood and walked over to DG, sitting next to her on the desk. “Let him come to you.”

“Oh, Raw, I feel terrible,” DG moaned, leaning her weight against Raw’s shoulder. “I love Glitch. I didn’t mean to hurt him...I just wasn’t thinking.”

“Glitch will come around. Patience.”

Cain found Glitch on his favorite balcony, the one that overlooked the largest of the garden’s fountains. Glitch had admitted months ago that he was often transfixed by the flow of water and it let him clear his mind. Making sure his footsteps were loud enough to be heard, Cain ended up leaning against the railing a couple of feet from where Glitch was doing the same. “You know she didn’t mean it,” he said finally.

There wasn’t a reply and Cain wasn’t surprised. “How about we all just take the rest of the day off from the books. Go for a walk, have dinner. Then we’ll talk to DG, together. Pick up the research again tomorrow.”

Glitch straightened his arms, palms flat against the top of the railing. He opened his mouth, but no sound came out. With a perplexed frown, he looked at Cain and tried to speak again. Nothing happened.

“Glitch?” Cain stood quickly, a knot of concern growing in his stomach.

Instead of answering, Glitch grabbed Cain’s arm and dragged him back the way they’d come. The door to library was still ajar and Glitch pushed it open hard enough to make it bounce back from the wall.

DG stood quickly, sticking close to Raw’s side. “Glitch! Listen, I’m really sorry about what I said – “

But Glitch didn’t let her continue, instead gesturing frantically with his hands. His mouth moved, forming unspoken words.

It was Raw who figured it out first, though Cain was a close second. “Can’t talk,” Raw announced, moving quickly and reaching out to touch Glitch’s throat carefully. Turning back to DG, Raw explained with short, sharp words. “Magic. DG made Glitch mute.”

“Oh my god,” DG drew a shuddering breath, her hand over her mouth. “What do I do?”

“Fix him!” Cain roared, taking his place at Glitch’s side, one hand wrapping around Glitch’s wrist. Glitch shook out of the grip just long enough to move his hand up to clasp his fingers with Cain’s; there was a tremor there that had Cain’s heart pounding. “Please. DG. Whatever you did, just – undo it. Do it again. Whatever.”

“Okay,” DG closed her eyes, drawing her body up straight. She pulled in a deep pull of air and released it slowly. “Glitch, I’m sorry. I’m so sorry. Please talk to me.”

Glitch glanced at Cain first, before taking a breath. “I – oh, Deeg.” He reached for her with his free arm, pulling her close but not releasing Cain’s hand. “I know you didn’t mean what you said and I especially know you didn’t mean for it to become literal. We could all use a break from the books about now.”

DG sighed in relief and clung to Glitch for another moment. “You have to know I didn’t mean what I said. Your insight is really valuable and I always appreciate your voice. Please don’t feel like I don’t value you. Because I do, more than you know.”

“I know,” Glitch assured her, pressing a kiss to the top of her head before pulling away. His smile was fragile but genuine. “We’ll talk more later. I just...need some time. Okay?”

“Okay,” DG nodded, tucking her hair behind her ear. “See you at dinner?”

“Of course,” Glitch gave a firm nod and stepped back, pressing up against Cain. He waited until DG and Raw left the room before speaking again. “Come on,” he said to Cain. “You said something about a walk?”

Cain pressed his lips just behind Glitch’s ear, sliding his arms around Glitch’s middle. “We could do that. Or something else to help clear our heads.”

“Going upstairs requires some walking.”

“Yes, it does. Let’s go.”

I love this on so many levels, it's like a... a highrise of love.
I love that he forgives her so graciously after her little screw-up became a big one. I love "His smile was fragile but genuine."
How he latched onto Cain's hand and didn't let go even while he was hugging DG and kissing the top of her head. Cain reading the tremor through the hand. Defender!Cain speaking for him!!!!! Demanding DG “Fix him!”.
And this:
Left alone with DG, Raw closed his eyes and let the residual pain left by Glitch wash past him, along with the hurt and anger from Cain. Awesome insight into how Raw perceives things.
*happy, happy sigh*

*snuggles you* Thank you so much for all these lovely, wonderful comments! I was really uncertain about how this turned out, especially as I had wanted Glitch to be less "it's all good!" and more "we'll deal with this later, I need some time alone, and by alone I mean with Cain." I'm glad it worked out in the end into something enjoyable! :D

You know I love Defender!Cain and anything to do with Raw....*grin*

I went out and walked the dog and came back and I'm STILL thinking about this fic. You know, I think in fandom we love Glitch so much we tend to gloss over certain things, but he canonically is shown as several times going off on these long tangents that wear on the nerves and patience of the people around him. This is of course understandable given how isolated he probably was for so long, but also makes the very scenario you describe here not only plausible but likely to happen at some point. It was great you showed DG as being fallible, and that you showed Glitch as needing some time alone (with Cain :) to regain some composure first before responding, so he didn't hurt her by replying with hurt or anger. A very human response.
And now I've gone on a tangent. I just wanted you to know how much I loved this story.

Oh! That's such a great way to look at it! That's really what I was going for so I'm so happy to hear that it's the feeling that came through. You're always so good at picking up on the intentions of what's written, even when they're not even clear to me! :D

*blush* That's not me being so good at picking up on things, that you being so good at writing. ♥

he canonically is shown as several times going off on these long tangents that wear on the nerves and patience of the people around him.

Oh, beautifully put! Gives me a whole new insight into the wonderfulness of this story. :-)

Meep! My heart was pounding as hard as Cain's me thinks when Raw said "Can't talk". I also think my eyes were wide as saucers.

This may not make any sense but for some reason this line just sticks out to me, Then his arm simply fell, his expression completely unreadable. Maybe because it just makes my heart clench.

And I love the turn you took at the end! -giggle- It was to cute, "Going upstairs requires some walking." For some reason I can just see Glitch scratching himself behind the ear with that cute smile of his as he glances over at Cain.

*hugs!* Thank you so much! Mmm yes - I'm glad you mentiond that line, actually. I had this strong impression of Glitch basically just shutting down right there, I'm glad the phrasing had the desired effect!

That is such an adorable image! *squee* I love it! *happy grin*

aww I love it and DG/Raw? There so needs to be more DG/Raw fic
Apr. 13th, 2009 06:43 am (UTC)
Hehehe! Thanks! And yes, I agree, there needs to be more DG/Raw. There's a few gems out there. kseda's "Twister City" AU comes to mind, as well as a few others.

...though my heart will *always* be with Raw/Jeb. They're my (other) OTP. *grin*
Apr. 13th, 2009 06:48 am (UTC)
Your wonderful stories did make me a Raw/Jeb lover.Speaking of which is there anymore Raw/Jeb stories coming *gives puppy eyes* They kind of my crack :)
Apr. 13th, 2009 07:00 am (UTC)
*rofl* Ya know, they're my crack, too! *giggles* Yeah, there's more. Nothing solid yet, but at least a continuation of the mpreg 'verse (which I'm considering AU of "Perceptible" 'verse) and hopefully a continuation of "Perceptible" itself. Those are just the long ones. Who knows what other little things might pop up, too? :D

I loved the interaction between everyone.
They are all so in tune with each other.
They rely on each other so much and because of that they hurt each other so easily.
The unique dynamic of all them comes shining through in this. It's lovely work.
Apr. 13th, 2009 02:57 pm (UTC)
Thank you! The four of them have such a closeknit relationship and that itself is often interesting to explore. :D
Apr. 13th, 2009 02:14 pm (UTC)
This is lovely! The way that even hurt Glitch is so easily forgiving.

“Going upstairs requires some walking.”

Those two really are adorable *g*
Apr. 13th, 2009 02:58 pm (UTC)
Thank you so much! Poor Glitch, he needs some cuddling after all that! :D
Apr. 13th, 2009 04:16 pm (UTC)
I thoroughly enjoyed this, and I especially liked the twist that DG had accidentally used her magic - I wasn't expecting that, but it totally made sense!

And this made me wibble: Glitch shook out of the grip just long enough to move his hand up to clasp his fingers with Cain’s; there was a tremor there that had Cain’s heart pounding. *wibbles again just rereading it*
Apr. 13th, 2009 04:30 pm (UTC)
Oh, thank you! It just seems like if DG says something, or "wants" something strongly enough, something like this might happen by accident.

*HUGS* Awww...*wibbles too* Poor scared Glitch!
Apr. 13th, 2009 10:48 pm (UTC)
Ohh yay, DG/Rawness is sweet! <3 And I love pissedoff!Glitch, there needs to be more fics of that! :D And this is a VERY original idea. *nods firmly* More magic accident fics are needed too!

*adds this all to the list, and this fic to memories*
Apr. 13th, 2009 10:59 pm (UTC)
Hehhee! *dances you* I'm with you on all those points. DG/Raw is adorable to consider, I have a serious kink for Really Angry Glitch (though you should see how pissed Raw's gonna get in the Perceptible sequel...assuming I ever get off my ass to write it!)..and YES to accidental magic! :D

\o/ Thank you!!
Apr. 15th, 2009 01:09 am (UTC)
Wonderful! I love the idea (weirdly enough, lol) that DG might make something unintended happen just by saying something...makes being a magic user a lot more interesting and scary!
Apr. 15th, 2009 01:14 am (UTC)
Indeed it would! :D Thanks!
