12. No rhyme or reason

Raw found DG in the laundry room. He could hear the frustration and anxiety simmering just below the surface as he stopped at the door to get a feel for her.

Knocking softly on the frame, he waited until she glanced back to acknowledge him before trying to approach. She was hunched over a large ceramic sink, a stiff fabric brush in one hand and Glitch’s formerly white shirt in the other. It was clear that she had been scrubbing at it for a while, the white sink stained red from her futile efforts. “DG...upset,” he struggled to find the right words to get her talking.

Apparently that was the wrong one. She threw the brush across the room. “Of course I’m upset, Raw! I nearly killed Glitch and he’s the one who talked me into it!”

He reached down and gently pulled the soaked cloth from between her tightly clenched fingers. “Glitch have other shirts,” he reminded her, catching her eye. “He ask a lot of DG.”

DG turned her back to the sink and slid down the cabinet doors to sit on the floor, dropping her head in her hands. “Yes, he did,” she sighed heavily.

Raw sat down at her side, resting a big hand on her shoulder. “Too much?”

She tipped her head back against the door at her back. “You’d think so, but...he was so sure. I don’t even know if he honestly thought it would work, but it did. There’s no rhyme or reason to the things he comes up with but he hasn’t failed us yet. He’s like the worst kind of overprotective big brother but I trust him. I have to trust him, or none of us would still be alive.”

Choosing his words carefully, Raw replied with heartfelt passion. “If we show Glitch we trust him, Glitch will trust self.”

The princess considered this for a long, long time. “So I made the right choice?” She asked with a trace of insecurity.

Raw nodded then tapped her on the nose with his finger. “Don’t tell Glitch.”

DG laughed. “Wouldn’t want him to think he was right, doing what he did. Come on, I feel like making pancakes.”

Standing up with DG, Raw frowned. “Cook? No fresh ingredients here.”

“Then we’ll just have to go shopping, then, won’t we?” DG bounced on her toes. “Come on, there’s a market just down the street. Glitch is probably sleeping, so I’ll have to wait to talk to him anyway, and Cain won’t leave his side for a second.”

“Shopping,” Raw agreed with a firm nod.

They stopped by the guys’ room to let Cain know they were going out. DG caught his eye for a brief moment, a small smile letting him know she was going to be all right.

By the time Raw and DG returned with the makings for pancakes and had spent a good deal of time in the kitchen preparing the meal, hours had passed and the suns had long since set.

They each carried two plates of warm food to the room Glitch and Wyatt had claimed. Cain looked up and grinned happily at them, reaching down to shake Glitch’s shoulder. “Come on, sunshine, room service has arrived.”

Glitch made a pathetic snuffling sound into Cain’s leg but managed to open one eye. When he spotted the food he beamed and sat up, scratching at the back of his zipper. “You guys are the best! It’s not morning already, is it?”

“No, I just felt like pancakes,” DG sat on the bed on Glitch’s other side, leaving Cain’s side open for Raw while they handed plates to the other two.

“What are pancakes?” Glitch asked even as he stabbed at the offering with his fork.

“Oh...uh, I guess it’s like sweet, flat bread,” DG explained. “You’ll like them.”

After a few surprised sounds, the four ate in comfortable silence. When they finished, Cain and Raw took the plates and stacked them on an empty table, taking more time than necessary.

DG seized the opportunity to scoot up and give Glitch a tight hug, “I just wanted you to know I had a talk with Raw about everything and I think we’ll get it all figured out.”

Glitch clung to her, eyes closing and soaking in her embrace. “I’m so sorry I had to ask you to do something like that,” he told her softly. “It was the only thing I could think of. I really do need more time to study my old journals. I’m positive there are better ways to control dark magic than...well, what we did.”

“There had better be, Mister, or you’re retiring right this instant,” DG gave him a stern look when she pulled away.

“Yes, Your Highness,” Glitch gave her a half-bow from where he sat. “Now, as lovely as the company is, I believe I am in desperate need of a shower. Bless the city planners who turned the utilities back on here!”

“That is a fabulous idea,” DG told him as she stood. “I could go for a long, hot soak myself.” She stood then leaned down and kissed Glitch’s cheek. “Have a good night, Glitch.”

Glitch gave her his crooked smile. “You too, Princess.”

Oh....now I want pancakes with warm maple syrup and butter......oh, sorry, pancake distraction.

I'm glad DG is feeling better after having to do that. Though I'm sure glad Cain didn't have to do it, he's have a way worse time with it. And pancakes are definitely the way to make it better, LOL!

Pancakes are endlessly distracting. :D

It is a good thing Cain didn't have to do it - I honestly believe he couldn't go through with it.

I really loved this chapter focusing on DG. It really brings a good deal of depth to the story and her character.

Mmm pancakes... if I hadn't just eaten an orange...

Oh, good! I really struggled with this part, knowing that DG's side had to be dealt with but she is incredibly hard to write. Her reactions to things are always so unusual and unexpected, so I tried to keep that in mind here.

*offers pancakes now that it's morning* :D

Yeah, there would have been no way Wyatt could have done it. I am also glad Glitch had clarity enough to point them to the Mortainium in the hilt of the sword to get them home.

*nodnod* I totally agree - Wyatt couldn't have gone through with it. Also, Glitch is such a resourceful guy, you know he's got to have all kinds of tricks up his sleeve!

Everything is better with pancakes!

Yay pancakes!! Somehow, with DG, it just seemed like the right way to go. She's so weird!

Mmmm pancakes. ^^ I love pancakes at night.

I'm glad DG is happy-ish again. She went through some bad stuff, so she needed the cheering up (and shopping).

Yep. Who wouldn't want to go shopping with Raw? :D
